50 years ago the Berlin Wall was erected overnight. It ran directly in front of the Aagaard family home. Eventually, they dug an escape tunnel to West Berlin. The Aagaards had to build extra walls and suspended ceilings to hide almost 75 cubic meters of sand.They lived in constant fear of arousing the suspicion of the border guards who patrolled no-man’s-land between Glienicke and Hermsdorf in West Berlin. The family and some of their friends successfully launched their escape on March 10, 1963. Today, the Aagaards live in their former home. An archaeologist has now unearthed the tunnel - allowing the family a glimpse into their own past.
