To successfully duplicate any item you have to have dogmeat as your companion and throw the item you want to duplicate on the ground. Order dogmeat to pick it up for you.

This can take a few attempts to get right, because you have to grab the item again at the same time dogmeat picks it up. If you have done it right you will have it in your inventory and dogmeat will throw a second version of this item on the ground.
